Cabling for Digital Ceiling

R&M is supporting initiatives for digital office and room ceilings also referred to as digital ceiling. The idea is to use ceilings for local data networks, Power over Ethernet and the Internet of Things. The important thing is what the cabling on the ceiling looks like.

LED lighting via data network

LED Sign

The Internet of Things (IoT) is moving into office ceilings. And the key is digital ceiling. It facilitates the setup of IP infrastructures for digitized building services management. On the ceiling, sensors, and controls for lighting, air conditioning, and surveillance are simpler to wire and connect with the local data network.

Furthermore, digital ceiling supports the use of Power over Ethernet (PoE). For example, the data network can supply electricity to the LED lighting on the ceiling. At the same time, every LED light is assigned an IP address and a connection with building services engineering.

Functions and services which to date have been separated can be united in one network. This results in opportunities for automating office and building operations. LED ceiling lights featuring sensors and a data network connection are already available on the market.

Making provisions for service outlets

It is often the case that cabling and a power supply for IP end devices on the ceiling are missing. While EN 50173-6 specifies cabling with service outlets (SO) installed on office ceilings, these are usually designed to supply WLAN access points only.

The LED light endpoints can also be integrated into the LAN via the service outlets. But often there are not sufficient connection points available at the SO for this purpose. In the future, building owners, planners and installers will, therefore, have to ensure that they install sufficient structured cabling with SOs and a power supply in the ceiling. Power over Ethernet (PoE) can supply power to end devices such as LED lights.

U-Box as platform

R&M has developed digital ceiling solutions on the basis of tried and tested and application-neutral, structured cabling systems for office buildings.

The R&M U-Box is the core of these solutions. The multifunctional, flat distributor housing can provide LAN and power connections.
